Tim Green was sworn in Tuesday to represent District 4 on the Lubbock City Council after he won a special runoff election earlier in the month.
The City Council hosted a special meeting early Tuesday, Aug. 11, to canvas the final returns from the Aug. 1 runoff and declare the results from the special election that was called to fill the remainder of the four-year term being vacated by outgoing Councilman Brayden Rose.
Results presented to the council showed Green won the special election with 1,881 votes - about 60.8% of the 3,094 votes cast - while Gary Boren received 1,213 votes.
The special election went to the Aug. 1 runoff after Green and Boren respectively emerged as the top two candidates in a five-person race to determine who would replace
Rose in the south-central Lubbock council seat. Rose announced his resignation earlier in the year - acknowledging a need to spend more time with his family - and formally vacated his seat when Green was sworn in Tuesday.
Mayor Mark McBrayer and fellow councilmembers offered praise for Rose and welcomed Green.
"We're all excited to welcome Tim Green to our council, but at the same time it's with great reluctance we say goodbye to Councilman Brayden Rose as he steps down from the council," McBrayer said.
Green, a homebuilder and former Lubbock firefighter, shared a brief message after his swearing-in ceremony in the council chambers, thanking his family and supporters, sharing his appreciation for Rose's service and praising his fellow candidates in the special election.
"You all ran a strong campaign and you made me a lot better candidate," Green said. "It was a tough race and that's democracy at work and it makes all of us better."
Green added: "To everyone in District 4 - whether you voted for me, or someone else or not at all - I pledge to represent every one of you and, yes, you'll be joining me on the dais as well."
