A ceremonial groundbreaking Friday morning will help kick off the long-awaited project to reconstruct the Broadway thoroughfare in downtown Lubbock.
The event featuring city leaders is set for 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 14, on Broadway and Avenue M and will mark the beginning of the construction phase of the Broadway project approved by voters in a 2024 street bond election.
This next phase comes after the Lubbock City Council in June approved awarding more than $19 million in funding for additional design and construction.
At the time, Mayor Mark McBrayer said construction was expected to begin in late summer and last roughly a year and a half.
“It'll be a beautiful stretch of Broadway,” McBrayer said. “Our city park - Pickering Park - will be done by
the end of this year. It's going to be a real nice addition to our downtown area."
What will Broadway reconstruction entail in Lubbock?
Reconstruction of Broadway from Avenue Q to Avenue E includes a new three-lane concrete road with street parking and bike lanes on both sides of the road.
Engineered brick pavers with alternating colors will be placed at intersections and crosswalks. The project will include new sidewalks, benches, bike racks, and trees on both sides of Broadway.
To ensure that this pavement is undisturbed for the near future, there will be upgrades to the water pipes, sewer system, drainage, illumination, and traffic signals on and around Broadway.
Lubbock City Council approves Broadway construction to begin this summer
Back in June, the Lubbock City Council approved authorizing the execution of a construction services contract for reconstruction of Broadway as part of the Street Bond Project.
Specifically, the city moved forward with a more than $17 million bid from Ti-Zack Concrete, LLC of Le Center, Minnesota for the re-construction of Broadway from Avenue Q to Avenue E.
The council also approved an additional $1,354,695 to Freese and Nichols Inc. for an additional 36 months to provide construction phase services for the Broadway project.
The City Council previously awarded Professional Services Agreement 18588 to Freese and Nichols Inc. - a contract of $2,631,026 of 15 months on Jan. 14, 2025, for design phase services for the Broadway Reconstruction.
According to past A-J reporting, the entire voter-approved $103 million bond package was intended to tackle seven road construction projects throughout the city, several of which are underway, including:
- Broadway from Avenue Q to Avenue E
- University Avenue from 50th Street to South Loop 289
- Upland Avenue from 98th Street to 114th Street
- 34th Street from Upland Avenue to Alcove Avenue
- 146th Street from University Avenue to Avenue P
- 146th Street from Slide Road to Quaker Avenue
- Avenue P from 130th Street to 146th Street
