Ballet Lubbock has named a professional dancer from Utah as the new assistant artistic director.
Starting Aug. 3, 2026, Tyler Gum, Ballet West Principal Artist based in Utah, will become the assistant artistic director for Ballet Lubbock, according to a news release from the organization. Gum brings 16 years of experience from Ballet West where he became known for "technical excellence, theatrical versatility, and compelling artistry," according to the release.
“Sixteen years as a professional dancer taught me so much about artistry, excellence, discipline, and what it means to build a company,” Gum said. “I look forward to bringing that experience to Ballet Lubbock and helping shape dancers’ careers in ways that honor the many voices that helped
me become the artist and person I am today.”
Gum is also an experienced teacher, choreographer and arts teacher, having taught through the Frederick Q. Lawson Ballet West Academy and Halili Cruz School of Ballet, along with community outreach with Ballet West for Children. He is a certified coach and has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ballet.
“We could not be more excited to welcome Tyler to Ballet Lubbock,” said Lily Balogh, Artistic Director. “He brings an incredible depth of professional experience, artistry, and knowledge, but he also brings such warmth, joy, and genuine care for dancers. Tyler understands how to challenge young artists, nurture their individual voices, and help them see what is possible for their futures. Our students, faculty, and entire Ballet Lubbock community will be stronger because he is here.”
Gum will be back with Ballet West in the fall for his final performances of Dracula from Oct. 23-31, before retiring from the stage and returning to Lubbock. As assistant artistic director, Gum will guide programming, curriculum, teaching, and support the program's training opportunities, including the Trainee Program for dancers between 18-22 years old.
“This is such an exciting moment for Ballet Lubbock,” Balogh said. “Tyler believes, as we do, that excellent dance education shapes more than strong dancers, it builds confident, creative, and compassionate people. We cannot wait for West Texas to get to know him.”
