Hoping to support active-duty service members preparing for deployments across the country, a Lubbock-based nonprofit organization is giving back to those who servethrough simple acts of kindness.

parent Jeff Brown of Lubbock launched Food 4 Troops as a non-profit organization dedicated to providing meal money and resources, such as gift cards, to active-duty service members stationed stateside who live in barracks.
“We try to get people to support (Food4Troops) and show that these people appreciate it by giving them gift cards for restaurants so that they can take a loved one out to dinner before they ship out,” he said.
Brown said that when military members are stateside, if they're single, living in the barracks, and in the U.S. Army or the Marines, they'll be charged for their food.
“A lot of them find that out when it comes out of their check the first time,” he said.
Brown said he felt inspired to start Food4Troops as his son served in the U.S. Army as a combat engineer, including a deployment in Afghanistan.
While military members are shy about the recognition they receive, Brown said they appreciate being recognized by the community as it’s not as common as one may think.
“Less than 1% raise their hand to go serve in our population, and those that do, obviously their nutrition is important, but we want them to feel appreciated, so we're just trying to provide some sort of kindness before they leave,” Brown said.
