Frenship's James Ordonez shines in first start
It shouldn't come as a surprise another quarterback is thriving at Frenship.
James "Bear" Ordonez completed his first 10 passes in his debut, throwing five touchdowns in the first half as Frenship led 34-10. He finished 17 of 22 for 281 yards and no interceptions.
"He and I had a lot of conversations about the old frying pan," Tigers coach Jay Northcutt said, alluding to his metaphor of an inexperienced QB's struggles. "I know it'll come at some point. A lot of times it is the first game, but he seemed to have dodged it. Just a good performance by him and his teammates as well."
Lubbock-Cooper QB goes down injured in first half
Frenship
raced out to a 27-0 lead, and things got worse for Cooper late in the opening half.
A couple of minutes before halftime, Pirates sophomore QB Cooper Luensmann exited the game with an injury. He did not play the rest of the night and wore a sling after the break.
Luensmann was 5 of 9 passing for 32 yards and one touchdown. Blake Moore, Cooper's top defensive back, finished the game at QB.
"Blake's played a lot of quarterback," Pirates coach Chip Darden said. "He was a quarterback all the way through and as a freshman. He's been getting a lot of reps, and we trust him fine. But (the injury) is deflating for the team."
Frenship football regains hold of rivalry
The Tigers have now five of the past six meetings against Cooper. The lone loss was 57-56 in overtime last year. That was the third one-point game in the rivalry since 2021.
Before Friday, only one of the past seven was decided by more than one score. Frenship's road rout was the biggest margin in the series since the Pirates' 45-14 victory in 2018.
Northcutt said the team is aiming to bounce back from a 4-7 campaign. The Tigers' win snapped a two-game skid in season openers.
"Last year was a hard year," Northcutt said. "Had a lot of adversity that we fought through, but we expect to win. We wanted to get back on the winning track, and this was a great way to do it, for sure."
