Police say a man who led officers on a chase following a reported shooting was shot by an officer and later died Monday morning in east Lubbock.
The officer-involved shooting occurred in the 1800 block of Parkway Drive following a vehicle chase with police shortly after officers were initially called at 9:43 a.m. Aug. 24 to the 2100 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard for reports of shots fired, Lubbock Police Chief Seth Herman said in a brief news conference at the scene.
Herman said police initially received reports of a man firing shots in an area near Canyon Lake.
"The male displayed the gun while driving at Canyon Lake, as reported by callers," he said.
Herman said the man drove north on MLK and 19th Street and stopped briefly for officers
who attempted to pull him over. Ultimately, he said, the man continued in his vehicle and refused to show his hands.
"The subject pointed his gun out the window before fleeing from us again," he said.
The chase continued through east Lubbock, with officers making one failed attempt to forcibly stop his vehicle before the man drove into the parking lot near the 2100 block of MLK and drove behind the building on the southwest side where officers successfully forced his vehicle to stop.
"The subject stepped out of the vehicle with the firearm, forcing the officer to engage him with lethal fire," Herman said. "The subject was seriously injured and, immediately, officers began life-saving techniques before the arrival of EMS personnel."
The man, who was not immediately identified was taken to a Lubbock hospital with serious injuries and later died.
Other information about the circumstances leading to the shooting and other details were not immediately clear as the investigation is ongoing.
