We're not picking up where last season left off.
There's been a lot of turnover, which has created a fair amount of uncertainty as training camps wind down. Not every team that celebrated a championship is a lock to repeat and that is reflected in the preseason lohud Section 1 Power Rankings and CHSFL Power 5.
Stepinac and Fordham Prep kick off the season on Saturday and there is full slate of games coming ahead of Labor Day weekend.
We'll be posting weekly rankings each Monday during the season.
SECTION 1 POWER RANKINGS
Preseason
1. Somers
There is plenty of talent coming back and coming up, so it’s just a matter of dialing in on what’s made the program a statewide power. Last season: 8-3.
2. Rye
Garnets quarterback Charlie Brady isn’t the only impact player stepping into a starring role
so this group might need a minute to settle in. Last season: 14-0.
3. Clarkstown South
By the end of last season, these guys were sneaky good and they’re dropping back into Class A with an experienced roster. Last season: 4-6.
4. Mamaroneck
James Fitzgerald is built like the kind of quarterback every contender in Class AA is looking for. Last season: 11-2.
5. North Rockland
The defense was good enough to repeat a year ago, but the Red Raiders struggled to score when it really mattered. Last season: 6-4.
6. Bronxville
Will the Broncos dominate like they did last fall? No. Are they good enough to win another state Class C title? Yes. Last season: 12-0.
7. Westlake
When an injury landed Nick DiNapoli on the sideline for a critical series last November, everyone got to see how good Harry Hudd and James Meyer are. Last season: 8-2.
8. Scarsdale
It’s been suspiciously quiet on Post Road, which is usually a sign the Raiders are going to be a factor. Last season: 5-4.
9. Harrison
The numbers are solid, but the Huskies remain one injury removed from having to battle real adversity. Last season: 6-4
10. John Jay-East Fishkill
There's a lot of work to do, but the best thing about young players is the fact that they grow up so fast. Last season: 10-1.
CHSFL POWER 5
Preseason
1. Iona Prep
Have you seen these guys? This roster is really big and really fast. And the Gaels are quick to point out they're unafraid of any team on the schedule. Last season: 11-1.
2. St. Anthony’s
Xavier Bala is back. The league’s offensive player of the year is a four-star prospect who’s committed to Boston College. Last season: 7-5.
3. Monsignor Farrell
The only team that delivered a win against Iona Prep last season leads the CHSFL in attitude. Last season: 9-2.
4. Chaminade
After regaining traction each of the last two seasons, are the Flyers poised to knock off a CHSFL favorite? Last season: 7-5.
5. Stepinac
Incoming quarterback Dylan Wrona and running back Nahum Pierre should ignite more offense, but there are questions to answer on the other side of the ball. Last season: 6-5.
