A boil water advisory remains in effect for parts of southwest Yonkers through at least Thursday after a water main break in the city Sunday.
Between 50,000 and 70,000 residents could be affected by the advisory, according to the Westchester County Health Department.
What caused the Yonkers boil water advisory?
The break occurred Sunday night between Axminster Street and Ashburton Avenue after a state contractor accidentally struck a 30-inch city water main beneath the Saw Mill River Parkway near McLean Avenue, according to the health department.
The break caused a drop in water pressure, prompting the boil water advisory.
Health officials said the precaution was issued to protect against possible contamination from groundwater infiltration.
Which parts of Yonkers are affected?
The advisory affects residents and businesses in an area
south of Ashburton Avenue to the New York City line and between the Hudson River and the Saw Mill River Parkway.
Residents in the affected area should boil water before using it for:
- Drinking
- Preparing food
- Washing dishes by hand
- Brushing teeth
The advisory does not apply to bathing, washing clothes or using a dishwasher.
When will the Yonkers boil water advisory end?
Once the city completes repairs to the water main, water will be flushed from the system through fire hydrants in the affected area, the health department said.
After repairs are completed, the city will flush the system and collect water samples. The advisory will remain in effect until laboratory testing confirms the water is safe to drink.
