RAMAPO - Gabriel Stan of Stony Point, a former United States Post Office mail carrier accused of shoving a 4-year-old on his Ramapo delivery route, has been sentenced in Ramapo Town Court to three years' probation and issued a $1,000 fine.
Stan, 40, who was also originally charged with felony second-degree attempted assault, entered a guilty plea Oct. 6 to misdemeanor endangering the welfare of a child and was sentenced the same day, Ramapo court documents show. Town Judge Rhoda Schoenberger presided over the case.
A USPS spokesperson said Stan's service with USPS concluded July 27. Citing policy, the official declined to provide more information, saying USPS does not comment on administrative actions.
Captured on video
Town of Ramapo police had reported that the
incident happened Thursday, March 19, at 6:25 p.m. in Viola. The incident was captured on video.
Stan, of Stony Point, was delivering mail at an address in the Viola section of Ramapo when a 4-year-old Orthodox Jewish boy approached him. Stan was seen shoving the boy onto the ground, while other children watched from a distance.
'Violence against children is never acceptable'
The incident drew sharp criticism from public officials and concerns about antisemitism. But many, while excoriating any attack on a child, urged caution on assuming motives.
While there were originally assertions that hate crime charges could be weighed, that did not materialize.
Rockland County legislators Itamar Yeger and Joel Friedman, whose districts are concentrated in Ramapo, issued a statement condemning Stan's actions in the wake of the March incident.
“We want to acknowledge the Ramapo Police Department and Chaverim for their actions regarding this incident," Yeger and Friedman said in the March statement. "No matter the circumstances, violence against children is never acceptable. We condemn all harm to children in the strongest terms.”
