Westchester County is urging residents to take steps to protect their personal and financial information as identity theft and fraud remain ongoing concerns.
The Westchester County Department of Consumer Protection has shared 10 tips to help residents spot potential scams and reduce the risk of identity theft.
These 10 simple steps can help prevent identity theft
County officials recommend the following precautions:
- Shield keypads, paperwork and other personal information from people nearby when entering sensitive information in public.
- Shred bank statements, tax records and other confidential documents before throwing them away.
- Store financial records, identification documents and checkbooks in a secure location at home.
- Use secure USPS collection boxes for outgoing mail and retrieve incoming mail promptly.
- Help prevent check washing by using electronic payments when possible or permanent black gel ink when writing checks.
- Check website addresses carefully before making online purchases. Using a credit card or digital wallet can provide additional security.
- Be cautious of unexpected emails or text messages asking for personal information. Contact the company directly using verified contact information instead of responding to the message.
- Never give passwords, PINs or login credentials to unsolicited callers claiming to represent a bank or other financial institution.
- Avoid accessing sensitive accounts over unsecured public Wi-Fi unless using a secure VPN connection.
- Freeze your credit with the three major credit bureaus and regularly check your credit reports for suspicious activity.
Officials encourage residents to stay alert
Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins said residents can reduce their risk by staying informed and taking basic precautions.
“Protecting yourself from identity theft starts with staying informed,” Jenkins said. “As scams become more sophisticated, taking a few simple precautions can make a significant difference.”
Department of Consumer Protection Director Jim Maisano said residents should take time to verify unexpected requests before providing information or taking action.
“Many identity theft cases can be prevented by recognizing common warning signs and adopting smart security habits,” Maisano said. “Whether you’re shopping online, checking your mail or answering your phone, taking a moment to verify before you act can help protect your finances and your identity.”
