The field hockey player poll will run into the playoffs.
This week, coaches nominated four athletes for their Sept. 1-5 play, descriptions of which appear below.
The poll will close Thursday at 3 p.m.
Sophia Gac, Valhalla/Westlake
The junior, who's known for her calm demeanor under pressure, ability to guide defenders and ability to read opponents' plays, stopped 34 shots in a 6-0 home-opener loss to North Salem. That performance placed her No. 4 all-time in the state among high school goalies for single-game saves.
Caitlyn Mayfield, Somers
The senior midfielder, a four-year varsity player who's recognized for her non-stop, energized play, scored
Somers' first four goals in a 9-0 shutout of Croton/Hen Hud.
Annabelle Pragay, Edgemont
The senior netminder, who last year stopped 222 of the 280 shots she faced, has gotten off to another outstanding start. She saved 33 of 42 shots in a 9-0 loss to Ossining, tying her for fifth in the state among high school field hockey goalies all-time list for saves in a single game. Pragay, recognized for being cool under pressure and for her strong work ethic, is a four-year varsity player.
Kelsey Wong, Croton/Hen Hud
The Hen Hud senior goalie, who is quick and plays her angles well, stopped 14 of 15 shots as the newly-combined Croton/Hen Hud squad, nicknamed the Hudson Tigers, notched their first ever win with a 3-1 win over Hastings.
