A Yonkers man has been arrested following the stabbing death of his father, city police said.
Rami Ahmad, 31, was charged with second-degree murder after he was taken into custody Monday, Sept. 28.
At 7:45 that morning, police were called to the family's Smart Avenue home in the Dunwoodie neighborhood and found 61-year-old Hekmat Ahmad suffering from stab wounds. Police and ambulance workers treated him at the scene and he was taken to Westchester Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, police said in a news release Tuesday afternoon.
His son was identified as a suspect but had left the home. Later in the morning detectives learned Rami Ahmad was traveling north on the South County Trailway and he was taken into custody without incident just
before 11:15 am in the area of Kingston Avenue and Palmer Road near the trailway, less than a mile from the family's home.
A folding knife was recovered from him, police said.
Police Commissioner Christopher Sapienza commended his officers and other law enforcement agencies that assisted for the quick arrest in the case.
“This was a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the family as they deal with an unimaginable loss," he said in a statement.
Arraignment information was not immediately available.
