New York State Police have arrested an Orange County man accused of killing his father earlier this month and setting a fire to conceal the homicide.
Man charged with murder
Thomas David Ryan, 32, faces five felony charges:
- Second-degree murder
- Third-degree arson
- Tampering with physical evidence
- Concealment of a human corpse
- Fourth-degree grand larceny
Ryan
is accused of killing his father, Robert Ryan, 70, on Aug. 6 at a residence on Greenville Turnpike in the town of Greenville, Orange County.
State Police responded to a report of a structure fire at the residence and found a deceased man inside. Investigators determined the fire had been deliberately set and began investigating the death as a homicide.
Police said Ryan did not live with his father at the time of the incident and had no other known ties to the Greenville community.
Manhunt stretched across New York
Investigators said Ryan had lived a transient lifestyle and had previously stayed at numerous shelters throughout New York City, Long Island and northern New York.
He allegedly fled the area in his father's vehicle and was located after community members reported sightings of the vehicle, according to State Police.
Thomas Ryan apprehended
Ryan was apprehended on Aug. 9 in the Gilboa area of Schoharie County, ending a multiday manhunt that spanned several counties in eastern New York.
Gilboa is about two hours north of the Orange County town where the homicide occurred.
Ryan received medical treatment at the scene for injuries he suffered before being taken into custody. He was later taken to Westchester Medical Center for treatment.
He was released from the hospital Aug. 13 and charged with the five felonies, troopers said.
Ryan was arraigned at the Orange County Centralized Arraignment and remanded to the Orange County Jail without bail.
