This week the calendar turns to October and with that comes the second half of the regular season for many area high school field hockey teams, since playoffs launch later this month.
This week, Mamaroneck remains in the top spot, one of two teams undefeated in Section 1 play this season.
One team has moved from the bubble to the top 10 and one has slipped to the bubble.
Below see who's in, who's just outside the top 10.
Note: Records reflect games played through Sept. 25.
1. Mamaroneck (7-1) — One game was a 7-0 win with no shots allowed on goal. That was just another game for the Tigers. Nothing out of the ordinary. This week Mamaroneck has two games, which should translate to two more wins. Previously: 1
2. Lakeland (9-0) — The Hornets have outscored
their opponents 68-2 this season. Lakeland is shaping up to be the team to beat in Section 1 Class B. Previously: 2
3. Yorktown (7-1) —Two games and two shutouts later — including 8-0 over Bronxville — and the Huskers move up. Yorktown still has to play Rye, Lakeland and Mamaroneck this season. But it has already faced some tough competition and looked very good. Previously: 4
4. John Jay-Cross River (5-3) — Saturday's nor'easter temporarily blew away the Wolves' chance to go 6-3 on the season. But it was still a very good week for John Jay-Cross River with a 2-0 win over John Jay-East Fishkill and a 5-0 shutout of ranked Somers. Previously: 5
5. Horace Greeley (7-2) — The Quakers were missing two of their top weapons when they fell 5-0 to Lakeland. One, 2025 All-State honoree Sienna Tavolacci, isn't expected back until mid-October. But that would be in time for playoffs, a very big positive. And even without that talented junior, this remains a very good team. Previously: 3
6. Rye (3-3) — The Garnets easily won their two games last week and will be favored to win their three games this week. Previously: 6
7. White Plains (6-2) — The Tigers won all three of their games by shutout last week — two of them being blowouts. White Plains has four games this week but is unlikely to sweep, since Saturday they'll face No. 1 Mamaroneck. Previously: 9
8. Somers (6-2) — The Tuskers were shut out by John Jay-Cross River while going 1-1 last week — their other game a 1-0 win. They'll look to generate more offense this week when playing three times. Their toughest game will no doubt be against Greeley, which, banged up or not, will still be heavily favored. Previously: 8
9. Bronxville (5-2) — The Broncos remain in the top 10 not just because of their record but because this Class C school chooses to play elite schools from bigger classes, even when the result may be humbling, as was their shutout loss last week to Yorktown. There are multiple much larger schools that should follow Bronxville's example and look to play the best. Previously: 7
10. Hackley (3-1-1) — The Hornets leap into the top 10 after two wins, including one over then-ranked Rye Country Day. Previously: Not ranked
On the bubble: John Jay-East Fishkill (5-3), North Rockland (6-1), North Salem (5-1-1), Rye Country Day (2-1), Pearl River (7-1)
