A retired Mount Vernon police officer and his son are facing misdemeanor charges stemming from an altercation with a teenager outside BJs Wholesale Club in Yorktown last week, town police said.
Kenneth Rella, 56, of Yorktown, allegedly tried to hit the teenager with his car in the parking lot of the store on Crompond Road shortly before 9 p.m. Oct. 13. He then summoned his 18-year-old son to help and when his son arrived, they both allegedly started punching and shoving the teen, who police said suffered an injury.
Both Rellas were charged with third-degree assault and Kenneth Rella was also charged with second-degree reckless endangerment.
They were arraigned and released without bail. Town Judge Gary Raniolo issued an order of protection barring
them from any contact with the teenager.
Rella could not be reached and a lawyer representing him could not immediately be identified.
A Yorktown police press release initially identified the son but a corrected version left the name out because of his age. The Journal News/lohud is not naming him for that reason.
Kenneth Rella owns a paving company in Yorktown. He was a K-9 officer in the Mount Vernon Police Department before his retirement in 2016.
