Two former U.S. Postal Service employees in Westchester County were charged with scheming to steal more than 200 gift cards from the mail, according to federal prosecutors.
U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Jamie McDonald said in a release Friday that Pian Pian Wong-Tam, 59, a former USPS mail processing clerk in White Plains, and William Wong, 57, a former USPS mail clerk in Millwood, stole gift cards and other items from mail entrusted to them and used them for personal gain.
USPS customers reported missing gift cards
Multiple customers complained to the USPS Office of Inspector General about mail processed through the White Plains USPS Processing and Distribution Center that was being delivered damaged, with gift cards expected to be inside missing, McDonald said.
An investigation by the USPS Office of Inspector General found that between April 2025 and July 24, 2026, Wong-Tam allegedly took advantage of her position at the processing and distribution center to steal gift cards and other items of monetary value from mail she was responsible for processing.
Wong-Tam allegedly shared the stolen gift cards with Wong, who used them at a variety of businesses in multiple states for their personal benefit, according to McDonald.
The investigation alleges that the pair stole and used more than 200 gift cards valued between $25 and $500 each.
Former USPS employees face charges
Wong-Tam and Wong, both Manhattan residents, are each charged with:
- Conspiracy to steal and unlawfully possess mail
- Unlawful possession of mail
- Conspiracy to commit access device fraud
- Two counts of access device fraud
Each of those charges carries a maximum potential sentence of five years in prison, except the two counts of access device fraud, which each carry a maximum potential sentence of 10 years in prison.
Wong-Tam also was charged with theft of mail by a Postal Service officer or employee, which carries an additional maximum potential sentence of five years in prison.
