After the “Survivor” Season 51 premiere Wednesday, neither of the two contestants with New York ties was eliminated, and both will continue in the game.
The two-hour season premiere introduced the show's new “Open Era,” in which any rule, challenge, idol or twist from the past 50 seasons can be implemented throughout the game.
Here’s how New York's hometown contestants made their first impressions among the castaways.
Who are the two New York contestants on 'Survivor 51'?
“Survivor 51” has two contestants with connections to New York.
The first is Mike Pinsky, 32, the assistant director of baseball operations for the New York Yankees.
The second is Ori Jean-Charles, 27, of Spring Valley, a personal trainer.
What were the contestants' first impressions during the premiere?
From the moment the castaways began their game by swimming supplies from a ship to shore, connections
were budding and early alliances were forming.
Jean-Charles made a positive first impression with his fellow castaways and nearly formed an early alliance with Devin Way, Aaliyah Puglia and Angelica “Jelly” Loblack.
One connection appeared to shine brighter than the rest, as sparks flew between Loblack and Jean-Charles, potentially hinting at the season's first “showmance.”
However, Loblack's romantic hopes were dashed after the castaways split into two tribes, Savu and Toka. Jean-Charles was separated from his budding alliance and placed on Savu, while the others joined Toka. He quickly made friends with Sharonda Cox to start his journey on the island.
Pinsky, a member of Toka, had a quieter start to the season. He mostly kept to himself but made connections with former WWE NXT wrestler Brady Booker and Maggie Nestor.
Pinsky had an opportunity to make waves when the tribes were called to pick supplies. However, he chose not to reveal his negotiating skills from his job handling contracts for Yankees players. He said he did not want to be a negotiator on the show or reveal the nature of his job to his fellow tribemates.
What happened in Week 1 of 'Survivor 51'?
After arriving in Fiji, the castaways had to choose one member of the group to separate from the others and travel to the other side of the island.
Lewis Black, a social media content creator and farmer, volunteered and ended up on Exile Island. He failed the first challenge of the game while attempting to chop an idol down from a mast.
As the tribes began learning more about one another, Devin Way began questioning the trustworthiness of Jenna Doore and started campaigning to vote her out first if the tribe lost immunity.
On Savu, Eric Macksoud was identified as the weakest link by fellow Rhode Island native Rob Antonson, who became the first person this season to find an idol.
Who was voted off 'Survivor' tonight?
Jean-Charles and the Savu tribe won the first immunity challenge, while Pinsky and the Toka tribe were sent to tribal council to determine the first castaway to be eliminated.
After Toka's loss, the tribe's early group dynamics quickly deteriorated as castaways pointed fingers over who was responsible for losing the challenge.
Puglia revealed to the women of the tribe that Doore was being considered for elimination, while also arguing that Booker did not “pull his weight” despite being one of the strongest castaways. Meanwhile, other members of the tribe, including Booker, blamed Puglia for being too slow during parts of the challenge.
At tribal council, both Doore and Puglia played their Shot in the Dark, but neither received safety. Puglia, 25, of Providence, Rhode Island, was the first contestant eliminated.
What is new in this season of 'Survivor'?
This season features a new theme, “Open Era,” which means any advantage or twist from previous seasons can come into play at any time, creating unpredictable gameplay.
“Survivor” host Jeff Probst also revealed that the new theme means a coin toss like the one in Season 50 could increase the total prize money to $2 million.
During the show, Probst revealed that if a contestant fails to win the coin toss, the prize money still doubles but transfers to the next season. For example, contestants on Season 52 would compete for $2 million, but the coin toss could increase the final prize to $3 million.

Episodes of “Survivor” air weekly on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. on CBS and Paramount+ for premium subscribers. Episodes stream on Paramount+ the following day.
