One of the best games of the year was played Saturday,. It lived up to or perhaps even surpassed expectations.
Mamaroneck's 2-1 overtime win over Lakeland further cemented the teams' as No. 1 and No. 2 in the Journal News/lohud rankings.
Below find the latest rankings,, which are led, as they have been since opening day, by the Mamaroneck Tigers.
1. Mamaroneck (12-1) — The Tigers have yet to lose to a Section 1 opponent. After Lakeland tied the game Saturday with a fourth quarter goal, Mamaroneck won 2-1 in overtime. Not to fast-forward too much, but a Mamaroneck return trip to the state Class A championship wouldn't be a surprise. Previously: 1
2. Lakeland (13-1) — In suffering its first loss of the season in overtime to Class A Mamaroneck, Lakeland showed
it's clearly the area's second best team. Section 1 Class B has multiple strong teams but, at this moment, not one is better than the Hornets. in Class B Previously: 2
3. Yorktown (12-1) — In an impressive showing, the Huskers shut out two ranked opponents last week. This week, they have two games, the second against Lakeland. Next week, Yorktown wraps up the regular season against Mamaroneck. While Lakeland is favored to win their class, Yorktown is a close second. This week's game vs. the Hornets may show just how close. Previously: 3
4. John Jay-Cross River (8-4) — The Wolves kept their game vs. Mamaroneck pretty close, falling 3-1 to go 1-1 last week. This week, they have three games, the most interesting being Thursday at No. 5 Greeley. Previously: 4
5. Horace Greeley (10-2) — The Quakers romped over Clarkstown in a convincing shutout win last week. They have three games this week, Thursday's against John Jay-Cross River could go either way. Previously: 5
6. White Plains (8-4) — The Tigers upset Rye 1-0 last week before falling 3-0 to talented Yorktown. Despite that loss, this is clearly the best Tigers team in years. Previously 7
7. Rye (7-5) — The Garnets got back in the win column after consecutive shutout losses to White Plains and Yorktown. Things will get immediately more difficult this week as Rye faces Lakeland before taking on Section 9's Kingston. Previously: 6
8. Bronxville (11-2) — The Broncos recorded three straight shutout wins last week. This week, they play Ursuline and Putnam Valley before wrapping up their season next week with a game against John Jay-Cross River. Previously: 8
9. John Jay-East Fishkill (10-4) — As forecast, the Patriots won two of their three games last week, beating Pleasantville and Ursuline but getting thumped 7-0 by Lakeland. This week, the Patriots play Somers and Pearl River, which is just a hair out of the top 10. John Jay-East Fishkill will be favored in both, but not by a lot. Previously: 9
10. Somers (9-3-1) — Well, Somers didn't beat Pearl River last week but it also didn't lose to it. That game was a defensive showdown with neither team managing to put the ball in the cage. That result and a win keep the Tuskers in the top 10. This week the Tuskers have three games, their toughest likely being against John Jay-East Fishkill. Previously: 10
On the bubble: Pawling (9-3), Pearl River (9-1-3)
