The 20-year-old victim of the fatal shooting in Yonkers Sunday night has been identified as Brandon Garcia, according to the Yonkers Police Department.
Garcia, a Yonkers resident, was shot and killed near the intersection of Palisade Avenue and Elm Street in what is being investigated as a "targeted act" of "group violence." Four teenagers were also injured in the shooting.
GoFundMe started to raise funds for funeral, victims of Yonkers shooting
Nelly Melendez, Garcia's aunt, has started a GoFundMe to raise funds for his funeral expenses and the medical bills of the other victims.
"Brandon was only 20 years old and had his whole life ahead of him," wrote Melendez on the fundraising site. "He was full of love, laughter, and so much potential."
"Every contribution, no matter the amount, will help ease some of the financial burden on the family during this devastating time," she continued.
Suspect in Yonkers shooting facing murder, attempted murder charges
The suspect in the shooting, a 15-year-old male, has been arraigned on charges of murder and attempted murder. The Journal News/lohud is not naming the alleged killer because of his age.
The firearm retrieved from the scene was reportedly stolen out of Georgia, according to an Aug. 4 news release from Yonkers police.
"Five seconds. Five victims. One young life lost," wrote Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano in the release. “We stand with every family affected by senseless acts of violence, but let me be clear: we are taking our streets back, and while New York State has taken the handcuffs off violent young offenders and put them on our judges and police officers, Yonkers will not tolerate this kind of violence."
