A Friday afternoon accident involving two trucks and two cars three decades ago shut the Tappan Zee Bridge and snarled the commute home and weekend getaway traffic for hours.
An eastbound Thruway maintenance truck was backing up to collect traffic cones shortly before 2 pm on Oct. 20, 1995, when it struck a curb near midspan on the Rockland side and veered into traffic. A tractor trailer carrying carpets hit the maintenance truck, sending both trucks spinning out of control. The semi jackknifed across all four lanes, with carpets and debris spilling over into the Rockland-bound lanes.
Both truck drivers suffered serious injuries and a woman whose Range Rover crashed into the tractor trailer suffered a minor head injury.
