Heavy rain and strong winds, along with significant coastal flooding, continued across parts of downstate New York as a powerful September nor’easter battered the region over the weekend gradually weakened.
Between 2 and 5 inches of rain fell across parts of New York City, the Hudson Valley and Long Island, as well as parts of New Jersey and coastal Connecticut.
The storm has been linked to one death in New York after a New York City Housing Authority employee was killed by a falling tree during the weekend. The nor’easter also caused power outages and travel disruptions across parts of the Northeast.
Coastal flood advisories remained in effect through Monday afternoon in portions of New York City and Long Island, where showers, gusty winds and elevated
water levels persisted.
The National Weather Service compiled rainfall reports from across the region, including observations from volunteer weather observers. The agency noted that the totals are preliminary and are not considered official observations.
How much rain fell?
Suffolk County recorded some of the highest rainfall totals by Monday morning, with approximately 5.33 inches reported in Upton.
Westchester and Rockland counties both received between 1.7 and 1.8 inches, while Putnam County received 1.41 inches.
In New York City, Brooklyn recorded 3.34 inches, with rainfall totals ranging from about 2 to 3 inches across the other boroughs.
Rainfall totals may change as additional measurements become available.
