NEW ROCHELLE - There might’ve been a collective sigh of relief throughout the league when Iona Prep graduated its two most explosive playmakers. Yeah, of course, a team doesn’t win two consecutive state titles without having depth and a program capable of reloading.
But what are the chances of the Gaels replacing talent to the level of Crew Davis and Julian Guzman without there at least being a noticeable step back?
Umm… Any feeling of relief might’ve been premature.
Because not only did Iona Prep show that it still is the class of the CHSFL, dominating the second half of a 24-9 win over rival Monsignor Farrell, but running back Chase Reeves and quarterback Jaydin Jackson again showed how lethal this offense can be.
Jackson threw touchdown passes
to Trey Newton and Tyrone Muschatt, and Reeves rushed for a touchdown and fueled a methodical ball-control offense in the second half as the Gaels turned a two-point halftime deficit into a two-touchdown victory.
The defense, whose starters haven’t allowed a second-half touchdown thus far, continued that streak with another gem, and even minimizing the damage of two early fumbles.
Farrell was the last team that beat Iona Prep, last October in the regular season, and the Gaels have rolled off nine straight wins since.
