Rain and coastal flooding concerns continued across parts of New York City and Long Island on Monday as a powerful September nor’easter that battered the region over the weekend gradually weakened.
Coastal flood advisories remained in effect through Monday afternoon in portions of New York City and Long Island, where showers, gusty winds and elevated water levels persisted.
The storm has been linked to one death in New York after a New York City Housing Authority employee was killed by a falling tree during the weekend. The nor’easter also caused flooding, power outages and travel disruptions across parts of the Northeast.
Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency Friday for New York City, Nassau and Suffolk counties on Long Island, and Westchester
County as forecasters warned of coastal flooding, strong winds and dangerous surf.
Coastal flooding remains the main concern
The National Weather Service forecast showers mainly through the morning in New York City, Nassau County and parts of Suffolk County before conditions gradually improve later Monday. Coastal flood advisories remained in effect until 2 p.m. in several shoreline communities.
Marine conditions also remained hazardous, with a Small Craft Advisory in effect for New York Harbor through Monday afternoon.
Conditions expected to improve
Forecasters expect drier weather to return Monday night, with mostly sunny conditions forecast Tuesday across New York City and Long Island.
The Governor's Office reported more than 28,000 power outages statewide during the storm Saturday, including more than 12,000 in Suffolk County and 8,000 in Nassau County. Those figures reflect weekend impacts and are not current Monday totals.
AccuWeather reported more than 200,000 customers across the Northeast lost power over the course of the storm, though outages had declined significantly by Sunday afternoon.
Current flight-delay and cancellation figures were not immediately available from official sources Monday morning. Travelers should check directly with their airlines before heading to the airport.
