New York native actress Hayden Panettiere's official cause and manner of death were announced Tuesday, Sept. 22.
Panettiere, best known for her roles in "Heroes," "Nashville" and the "Scream" franchise, died Aug. 16 in Greenville, South Carolina, at age 36.
The Greenville County Coroner's Office said in a statement Tuesday that EMS responders arrived at an apartment complex after receiving a report of cardiac arrest and found Panettiere unresponsive. EMS workers attempted advanced cardiac life support measures, but Panettiere was pronounced dead at the scene around 2:32 p.m.
Panettiere's cause of death revealed
The Greenville County Coroner's Office determined that Panettiere died from the toxic effects of fentanyl, alprazolam, methocarbamol, 4-ANPP and quetiapine. Her death was ruled
accidental, according to the coroner's office and People magazine.
No signs of trauma or foul play were found during the autopsy.
Greenville police previously reported that Panettiere's boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, and his brother, Zach Hickerson, were with her at the time of her death.
Authorities have not alleged that either man played any role in Panettiere's death.
Hickerson was detained Sept. 14 following an unrelated incident at a South Carolina restaurant, according to previous reports.
Hickerson and his brother were not reported to be present at Panettiere's celebration-of-life ceremony in Los Angeles on Sept. 19. Her mother, Lesley Vogel, also was not identified in published reports as having attended. Vogel and Panettiere had a tumultuous relationship, according to People.
Panettiere's past struggles with addiction
Shortly before her death, Panettiere released her memoir, "This Is Me: A Reckoning," in which she discussed postpartum depression, addiction and recovery, trauma, domestic abuse and loss.
Over the years, she spoke publicly about her struggles with addiction and postpartum depression in television and podcast interviews.
Panettiere is survived by her daughter, Kaya, whom she shared with former fiancé Wladimir Klitschko. Kaya was born in 2014.
In 2018, Panettiere and Klitschko separated, and their daughter remained primarily in Klitschko's care.
