A Yonkers man was arrested after a road rage incident that involved gunfire on the New York state Thruway in Yonkers, according to New York State Police.
Elmy Manuel Sandoval-Firpo, 28, was arrested on Sunday, Sept. 13 and is facing multiple felony charges, troopers said.
What happened on the Thruway?
The incident began shortly before 4:30 p.m. Sept. 13 when Sandoval-Firpo, driving a van, allegedly cut off a 25-year-old Bronx man driving a car while turning into a gas station on Tuckahoe Road in Yonkers, Westchester County, according to State Police.
The two men had a verbal altercation in the parking lot, during which Sandoval-Firpo allegedly smashed the rear windshield of the second driver's car, police said.
Both drivers then left the area.
Surveillance video later showed
Sandoval-Firpo driving south on the Thruway near the Cross County Parkway. He moved into the left lane and allegedly cut off the victim, which caused a collision, according to police.
Sandoval-Firpo is also accused of exiting his vehicle and firing a gun at the victim's vehicle, troopers said.
Both vehicles left the scene. The victim drove to a nearby location, where he was interviewed by troopers.
Suspect arrested after police pursuit
Yonkers police later located Sandoval-Firpo's vehicle and attempted to stop him, State Police said.
Sandoval-Firpo allegedly struck a marked Yonkers Police Department vehicle while attempting to evade officers, which sparked a pursuit.
He eventually stopped on the southbound lanes of the Thruway in Yonkers after his vehicle sustained a flat tire from an unknown cause. Yonkers police and State Police took him into custody.
No injuries were reported.
Charges filed
Sandoval-Firpo was charged with:
- Attempted second-degree murder
- Attempted first-degree assault
- First-degree reckless endangerment
- Second-degree criminal possession of a weapon — loaded firearm
- Third-degree criminal possession of a weapon — previous conviction
- Criminal possession of a firearm
- Second-degree menacing
- Multiple vehicle and traffic law violations
Sandoval-Firpo remanded to jail
Sandoval-Firpo was arraigned in Yonkers City Court and remanded to the Westchester County Jail in lieu of $20,000 cash bail, a $50,000 bond or a $75,000 10% partially secured bond.
He is scheduled to appear in Yonkers City Court at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 18 for a felony hearing.
An order of protection was issued for the victim.
The Westchester County Real Time Crime Unit assisted with the investigation and helped locate and identify the suspect vehicle, State Police said.
