The Journal News/lohud high school rankings began at the beginning of the current season with Mamaroneck in the top spot. With field hockey playoff seedings looming Wednesday, the Tigers remain there as the only team that has not lost to a Section 1 opponent.
This will be the final rankings until playoffs conclude.
Note: Regular-season games end Tuesday, Oct. 20 but rankings reflect games played through Oct. 18.
1. Mamaroneck (13-1) — The Tigers wrap up the regular season at Yorktown on Tuesday. They'll enter the Section 1 playoffs as the heavy favorite to win another Class A title. Three straight trips to the state final (winning two state titles) and a perfect record in Section 1 play provide reasons to believe this team's season will extend
well beyond the Section 1 playoffs. Previously: 1
2. Yorktown (14-1) — The Huskers' lone loss — 1-0 to Horace Greeley — seems like it occurred in a different season. Yorktown further distanced itself from that by handing Lakeland just its second loss of the season, 3-2, last week. That was an upset that changes the complexion of the Section 1 Class B playoffs, where nothing seems predictable right now with Yorktown, Lakeland, Rye (which tied Lakeland last week), John Jay-Cross River and, to a lesser extent, defending, but banged up, champion Horace Greeley all having a shot at the championship. Previously: 3
3. Lakeland (13-2-1) — Just a week ago, coming off an overtime loss to Class A Mamaroneck for its first setback of 2026, the Hornets seemed like the favorite to win the Class B title. And they may still do that. But a tie against Rye and loss to Yorktown last week mean, while Lakeland remains a very strong team, Yorktown, which has had a season to remember, will probably get the top seed and will be regarded as the team to beat in a class that has several teams capable of taking the crown. Previously: 2
4. John Jay-Cross River (11-4) — The Wolves won all three of their games by shutout last week and will wrap up the season favored against ranked Bronxville. This team, which fell by just two goals to Mamaroneck and one to Lakeland, shouldn't be dismissed in the playoff crown conversation. Previously: 4
5. White Plains (11-4) — The Tigers won all three of their games last week and should finish out the regular season with another win. Previously: 5
6. Rye (8-6-1) — There's little predictable about Rye, which got skunked 5-0 by Yorktown a week before tying Lakeland and then falling to Section 9's Kingston. One notable thing about this team is besides the Yorktown game and a 6-0 loss to Mamaroneck, the Garnets' other four losses were by just one goal and, forgetting Kingston, were all to ranked Section 1 teams. Previously: 6
7. Horace Greeley (12-3) — If any team deserves a tip of the cap for its play of late, it's the Quakers. They lost one of the section's best players to injury in Sienna Tavolacci but have continued to play well. Their 2-0 loss to John Jay-Cross River, combined with Rye's tie with Lakeland, drops them a bit in the rankings but this team still has the potential to do well in the Class B playoffs. Previously: 5
8. John Jay-East Fishkill (11-4-1) — The Patriots wrapped up the regular season by beating Ursuline and ranked Somers, but tying unranked Pearl River. Still, they are positioned to be one of the top seeds in Class A. Previously: 9
9. Bronxville (12-3) — The Broncos blanked fellow Class C team Putnam Valley but unexpectedly fell by a goal last week to Ursuline, which then got completely routed by Greeley. But Bronxville remains a top 10 team and the favorite to win the Section 1 Class C crown. Still, staying close will be a more realistic goal than winning when it wraps up its season Monday at John Jay-Cross River. Previously: 8
10. Somers (11-3-1) — The Tuskers went 2-1 last week, falling only to ranked John Jay-East Fishkill 4-2. They have one game left and will be favored. Previously: 10
On the bubble: Pawling (11-3), Pearl River (9-2-4)
