Three children were injured Wednesday after high-voltage utility lines fell at a day camp in Sullivan County, according to county officials.
The incident happened at about 1 p.m. Aug. 12 at Camp Shopron, also known as Machaneh Shopron, along Route 42 in the town of Fallsburg.
Three children airlifted to trauma center
Emergency dispatchers received reports that multiple children had come into contact with downed live wires near a wooded area of the camp, according to the Sullivan County Public Safety Division.
The Fallsburg Fire Department, Catskills Hatzolah Ambulance and Sullivan County Sheriff's Office responded and secured the area.
At least three children, ages 9 to 13, suffered electrical burn injuries, officials said. Three medical helicopters were brought to the scene, and the children were flown
to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla for treatment by a specialized trauma burn team.
All three children remained conscious and are expected to make full recoveries, according to county officials.
Cause of power line collapse under investigation
Utility crews from New York State Electric & Gas responded Wednesday evening to deactivate, isolate and remove the downed wiring.
The cause of the collapse remains under investigation by local law enforcement and utility safety inspectors. Officials said preliminary information suggests a fallen tree may have damaged the utility infrastructure overnight, but that has not been confirmed.
Additional updates regarding safety inspections at the camp are expected as they become available.
