A few standout performances and some impressive victories marked the first week of the boys soccer season. It also produced for us seven candidates for candidates for Boys Soccer Player of the Week, presented
by White Plains Hospital.
We'll compile a group of candidates each week and our readers will determine the winner. Coaches are encouraged to submit nominees from their teams whom they believe are deserving.
Read below about what the nominees accomplished last week, then cast your votes. The poll will be open until 3 p.m. Wednesday, and the winner will be featured on the lohud sports social media accounts.
Nick Ahmataj, Lakeland
He scored a goal in the Hornets' 3-0 win over Hen Hud and scored twice in a 3-2 win over Yorktown.
Jacob Bricker, Valhalla
The goalkeeper made 16 saves and helped the Vikings edge Briarcliff in a 5-3 round of penalty kicks to win the Mount Pleasant Cup. Bricker was named tournament MVP.
Matthew Castellanos, Carmel
The senior scored twice, including the winner late, for the Rams in a 3-2 win over North Salem.
Sebastian Chacon, Ardsley
The midfielder had three goals and an assist in the Panthers' 4-1 win over Croton-Harmon on Sunday in the consolation match of the Ossining River Cup tournament.
Yuua Izumi, Keio Academy
He scored three goals to lead Keio in a 3-1 win over Croton-Harmon last Thursday.
Nick Portanova, Mahopac
The midfielder scored two goals each in a 3-0 win over Yorktown and a victory over Brewster last week.
Griffin Warner, Irvington
The senior had two goals and two assists in the first half, leading the Bulldogs in a win over Woodlands to open the season. He also scored in their 2-0 win over Blind Brook last Friday.
