Both contestants with New York connections remained safe Wednesday after Episode 3 of "Survivor 51."
After online speculation about the episode's events because of alleged accidental spoilers, the episode confirmed that two contestants left the game: Rob Antonson voluntarily quit, while Patt Cannaday was voted out after a failed plan at Tribal Council. A major new twist also changed the course of the game.
Here's what happened in Episode 3 of "Survivor 51."
Who are the two New York contestants on 'Survivor 51'?
"Survivor 51" has two contestants with connections to New York.
Mike Pinsky, 32, is an assistant director of baseball operations for the New York Yankees.
Ori Jean-Charles, 27, is a personal trainer from Spring Valley, New York.
Both remained in the game after Episode 3.
What happens in Episode 3?
The episode picks up after
another dramatic Tribal Council, where Rob Antonson, 40, failed in his plan to save fellow Rhode Islander Eric Maksoud from elimination while also trying to vote himself out.
Antonson believed the tribe would be unified in voting Maksoud out, especially after he had campaigned for his removal. But after feeling the pressure of losing and being separated from his family, Antonson began questioning whether he wanted to remain in the game.
Antonson admitted he didn't want to simply quit, saying he felt that would "ruin the game." Minutes later, he was found lying alone on the beach and asked for a medic to examine a potential infection.
The medic found no serious injury, but Antonson continued to express his desire to leave the game. He ultimately became the first contestant of the season to voluntarily quit.
Jean-Charles and the rest of the Savu tribe were skeptical of Antonson's reasoning, believing he left because the game wasn't going the way he had hoped.
Before leaving, Antonson gave his hidden immunity idol to Carter Krull.
Meanwhile, connections continued to be tested within Toka as Danny Kilby attempted to sow division within the tribe. On Savu, Krull had just lost his biggest ally in Antonson but gained his idol.
Then came another major twist.
Two contestants from each tribe were given the opportunity to visit the opposing tribe and potentially stay there, creating a mutiny opportunity. Krull visited Toka, while Devin Way went to Savu and reunited with his Helicopter Alliance members Jean-Charles and Sharonda Cox.
Krull and Way also had the opportunity to find advantages during their visits that could influence future votes. Way found an extra vote while reinforcing his alliance with Cox. At Toka, Brady Booker and Maggie Nestor found the advantage connected to Krull's visit.
Way returned to Toka after warning the tribe about Kilby and strengthening his relationships with the other contestants.
Krull, meanwhile, ultimately chose to mutiny and remain on Toka after being convinced by members of the tribe that he could be an asset.
The changes left Savu with fewer members heading into the immunity challenge. Despite that disadvantage, Savu won the challenge after another puzzle comeback and earned an additional reward of four egg-laying hens.
Who was voted off 'Survivor'?
After Toka lost the immunity challenge, the tribe headed to Tribal Council.
Kilby again attempted to sow division within the group, specifically targeting the alliance between Way, Booker, Angelica Loblack, Patt Cannaday and Pinsky.
Cannaday and Pinsky were considered as possible targets, but Thien An Nguyen convinced the players outside the alliance to vote for Cannaday.
The plan worked.
Cannaday was voted out in a close 6-5 vote, becoming the third contestant voted out of "Survivor 51" and the third woman eliminated this season.
Current 'Survivor 51' idols and advantages
- Carter Krull: Hidden immunity idol, received from Rob Antonson in Episode 3
- Angelica "Jelly" Loblack: Hidden immunity idol (Episode 2)
- Devin Way: Extra vote, Episode 3
- Maggie Nestor: Extra vote, Episode 3
What is new in this season of 'Survivor'?
This season features a new theme called "Open Era," which means advantages and twists from previous seasons can return at any point, creating unpredictable gameplay.
Host Jeff Probst also revealed that the new theme could bring back a coin toss similar to the one featured in Season 50. The twist could increase the show's $1 million prize to $2 million.
Probst said that if a contestant fails to win the coin toss, the prize money would still double but transfer to the following season. For example, contestants on Season 52 could compete for $2 million, while a successful coin toss could increase the final prize to $3 million.
When is the next 'Survivor' episode?
