The Weather Service's seasonal outlook for September, October and November shows New York leaning toward above-normal temperatures. AccuWeather meteorologists are also forecasting an unusually warm start to fall in New York.
Two longtime weather almanacs have also released their predictions for fall in New York, with one offering a forecast that differs significantly from the two major weather services.
The Farmers' Almanac, like the major weather forecasting services, predicts widespread warmth in September followed by cooler temperatures and wetter conditions in October and November.
The Old Farmer's Almanac, however, called for drier but cooler weather this fall in western and central New York and the New York City area. Eastern New York, including
the Adirondacks and upper Hudson Valley, was forecast to be wetter and cooler.
Meteorological fall began Tuesday, Sept. 1. The autumnal equinox, which marks the astronomical start of fall, is Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 8:05 p.m. ET.
Will it be a rainy fall season in New York?
The Weather Service's seasonal outlook favors below-normal precipitation across much of New York and the Northeast. The outlook is expressed in probabilities, rather than a prediction that precipitation will be a specific percentage below normal.
Drier conditions could also contribute to drought concerns and increase the risk of wildfires in areas that remain dry. Recent thunderstorms, however, have helped ease drought conditions in parts of the East.
What temperatures are predicted this fall in NY?
Temperatures across New York are favored to be above normal during the September-October-November period, according to the Weather Service's seasonal outlook.
AccuWeather forecasts that September may feel more like an extension of summer across parts of the Northeast, with above-average temperatures, high humidity and warm nights possible.
Forecasters said it may be October before the first significant intrusions of chilly air reach the Great Lakes and Northeast.
The delayed arrival of cooler weather could have an upside for fall foliage. Sunny days combined with cooler nights can help produce more vibrant colors across the Northeast and Midwest.
