White Plains detectives are investigating a suspected case of child abandonment after a newborn baby was found at the Shop Rite supermarket at City Center.
The baby was discovered in the women's bathroom Sunday morning, Aug. 30. Police were notified and first-responders transported the infant to White Plains Hospital, where it was in stable condition, police said in a news release.
Harrison and Westchester County police K-9 units were assisting in the search for whoever left the baby.
Police used the incident to remind the public about New York's "Safe Haven" law, that precludes criminal charges if a baby less than 30 days old is left in a safe condition at a location such as a hospital, police department or fire station and someone is alerted
to the baby's presence.
White Plains police asked that anyone with information about the baby call the department at 914-422-6111. They emphasized that a photo circulating on social media with news of the incident was not the baby found Sunday morning.
