New York State Police are continuing a multi-agency search for a 32-year-old man wanted in connection with the Aug. 6 homicide of his father in the town of Greenville, Orange County.
The victim was identified as Robert Ryan, 70, of Greenville Turnpike. State police said Thomas David Ryan did not live with his father and has no other known current ties to the Greenville community.
Police said the preliminary investigation determined that the fire at Robert Ryan's home was deliberately set and that his death is being investigated as a homicide.
Suspect believed to be armed and dangerous
State police are seeking Thomas Ryan, who is believed to be armed and dangerous.
Investigators said Ryan fled the area in his father's gray 2016 Toyota Prius with New York license plate HNH-7671. He is 6 feet,
2 inches tall and weighs about 200 pounds.
Police said Ryan has lived a transient lifestyle and has stayed at numerous shelters across New York. He is also known to travel by train, and investigators are coordinating with rail transportation partners.
State police said Ryan is known to frequent the Plattsburgh area in Clinton County.
Anyone who sees Ryan or the vehicle should not approach or confront him. Police are asking the public to call 911 immediately.
Police ask residents to check surveillance footage
Investigators are conducting an extensive video canvass to reconstruct Ryan's movements following the homicide.
Residents and business owners in Greenville and surrounding communities are asked to review surveillance footage recorded from about 6 p.m. Aug. 6 through the overnight hours and report any suspicious activity.
Residents should expect investigators to conduct neighborhood canvasses and go door to door throughout the weekend. Additional State Police patrols also have been deployed throughout Greenville and surrounding communities.
Multiple agencies involved in search
The investigation is being led by the State Police Troop F Bureau of Criminal Investigation, with assistance from specialized units including the Major Crimes Unit, Computer Crimes Unit, Forensic Identification Unit, Community Stabilization Unit and Violent Gang and Narcotics Enforcement Team.
Other agencies assisting include the Middletown Police Department, Port Jervis Police Department, Orange County Sheriff's Office, New York City Police Department and FBI.
The New York State Intelligence Center, Hudson Valley Crime Analysis Center, Orange County Medical Examiner's Office and Orange County District Attorney's Office also are assisting.
State police said investigators are following every lead and reported sighting.
