The status quo was mostly held last week, although Mamaroneck threatened a significant jump in its showdown with New Rochelle. But, a few teams that have quietly excelled are bubbling up down the stretch, including Fox Lane, which earned its debut in the ranking.
This upcoming week will be interesting as several of the better large-school teams will be facing each other in heated league matchups, which creates the possibility of some considerable movement on this list.
Records are as of the morning of Oct. 6.
Boys soccer power rankings
1. Rye (10-0)
The Garnets continue humming along, having scored almost six times as many goals as they've allowed, and added three more decisive wins to the ledger last week. Rye does have a couple challenges upcoming, including facing Byram Hills and Class
AA state runner-up Cornwall. Last week: 1
2. New Rochelle (7-1-1)
The Huguenots came close to their first in-section loss last week, before tying Mamaroneck on a late penalty-kick goal. New Rochelle then lost to Section 9 powerhouse Newburgh before rebounding against Port Chester. They'll be challenged again this week, facing Scarsdale. Last week: 2
3. Mamaroneck (9-0-1)
They had a productive week with victories over Port Chester and White Plains but, players admitted, the New Rochelle tie "felt like a loss" because it was a missed opportunity. Nevertheless, Mamaroneck has made it clear how real their title chances are. Last week: 3
4. Scarsdale (7-1-1)
The 'Ders rebounded from a loss to Mamaroneck with three consecutive wins, including two dominant ones. They've got a challenging week ahead, though, hosting New Rochelle before a rematch with Mamaroneck. Last week: 4
5. Harrison (7-1-2)
The Huskies have been cutting it close and faltered a bit last week, playing to draws against two opponents they were favored against. They're still getting used to the "defending champion" status and getting everyone's best shot. Harrison did bounce back with a 4-0 victory over John Jay-Cross River, its first multi-goal win since Sept. 9. Last week: 5
6. Mahopac (8-1-1)
They've faced the two teams directly behind them in this ranking the last two weeks and held them at bay, beating Lakeland and Walter Panas. The Wolf Pac does have a rematch upcoming with Lakeland this week and that likely will be intense. Last week: 6
7. Walter Panas (6-2-1)
The Panthers responded to the 1-0 loss to Mahopac with a decisive win over Westlake the following day. Panas still is a work in progress, but they've got an excellent defense that has yielded more than a goal to anyone except Rye. Last week: 7
8. Lakeland (9-1-1)
Since the loss to Mahopac, the Hornets have won two blowouts and played to a tie. Barring a collapse, their record will secure them a high seed, but they've also got a chance at some statement wins down the stretch with Mahopac and Panas on the schedule. Last week: 8
9. Eastchester (6-0-2)
A week after making their debut here, the Eagles inch up a spot. They've allowed only four goals this season and turned some heads last week by holding Harrison scoreless in a tie. They'll host Fox Lane this week. Last week: 10
10. Fox Lane (5-1-3)
The Foxes make their debut in the ranking this week. They've quietly done well and managed to match some of the better teams, playing to ties with Mahopac, Byram Hills and Harrison. Lucas Ormazabal and Fredy Contreras are a dynamic tandem and they can make some noise down the stretch. Last week: N/R
On the bubble: Pleasantville (7-1-1), Tappan Zee (6-3), Briarcliff (9-1-2), North Rockland (4-3-3)
