Some teams expected to be rebuilding have hit the ground running and the pre-season No. 1 and No. 2 teams have played as expected, holding those spots as the high school field hockey season gets into full swing.
Below find this week's top 10 rankings.
Note: Records reflect games played through Sept. 13.
1. Mamaroneck (3-0) — Mamaroneck has been on cruise control since the first whistle sounded. Three games in and the Tigers have outscored their opponents by a collective 27-0. This week, the Tigers will be favored in both their Section 1 games, including against defending Section 1 Class B champion Horace Greeley. That game should be Mamaroneck's closest of the season to date, a good thing since then it will jump with both feet into the fire the next
day, playing two games in Max Field Hockey's high-level national invitational tournament in Pennsylvania. Previously: 1
2. Lakeland (4-0) — Lakeland is the model of consistency. So far, so good would be an understatement. It has won each of its four games 9-0. Things should get harder this week with games against Bronxville, John Jay-Cross River and Clarkstown, but Lakeland should be favored in all three games. Previously: 2
3. Horace Greeley (4-0) — Well, that was a pretty quick rebuild. Greeley, last year's Section 1 Class B champion, lost a bunch of talent to graduation. But, clearly, much remains. The Quakers' first two games were shutout wins. Then came an 8-1 win and then, most impressively, a 3-2 win over Yorktown, which was coming off a dominating performance over another top-ranked team in John Jay-Cross River. This week, the Quakers will face two more ranked teams in Rye and No. 1 Mamaroneck. It will be favored over Rye but, like most everyone else, it will be a longshot to beat Mamaroneck. Previously: 6
4. Yorktown (2-1) — The Huskers probably couldn't have looked and played better than they did vs. John Jay-Cross River. Yorktown won 4-0 but it could easily have been 8-0 if not for a standout performance by the Wolves' keeper. The Huskers' subsequent one-goal loss to Greeley means just one thing — Class B is again loaded with very strong teams. Previously: 4
5. John Jay-Cross River (2-2) — The Wolves looked like a shadow of last year's team in a 4-0, worse-than-the-score, loss to Yorktown. But then they rebounded with a dramatic 2-1 overtime win over then-No. 3 Rye. That win was both needed and a positive sign. John Jay-Cross River will probably split its two games this week, since one is vs. No. 2 Lakeland. Previously: 5
6. Rye (1-2) — The Garnets' record is misleading since their two losses were to top-ranked Mamaroneck and to another top-10 team, John Jay-Cross River, in OT. Things are not going to get easier in the short-term with games against Horace Greeley and Long Island power Garden City. Previously: 3
7. Bronxville (3-0) — After dominant wins last week over Pawling and Nyack, the Broncos will face their biggest test of the season, hosting Lakeland, one of Bronxville's two games this week. Previously: 9
8. White Plains (1-1) — The Tigers rebounded from their shutout loss to Horace Greeley by beating Ursuline 4-3. Much more will be known about White Plains after this week's games vs. John Jay-East Fishkill, Somers and Suffern. Previously: 8
9. John Jay-East Fishkill (2-0) — The Patriots routed Scarsdale 12-0 last week. They will have little rest this week with four games. The most interesting should be Tuesday against White Plains. Previously: Not ranked
10. Rye Country Day (1-0) — The Wildcats launched their season with a nice 2-1 win over Greenwich Country Day off a rebound off a penalty corner with time expired. It will play this week at Hopkins. Previously: 10
On the bubble: Arlington (2-0), Clarkstown (1-2), North Salem (3-0), Pearl River (3-0); Hackley (0-0).
