The bodies of two construction workers were found Saturday in Stockton after a trench collapse at a construction site, Stockton Fire Department officials said.
Firefighters were called at about 5:15 a.m. to the 7900 block of North El Dorado Street on a report of a collapse, Deputy Chief Erik Patten said. At the scene, crews found a construction site with what appeared to be trench collapse.
Patten said the reporting party said two people, who he believed were in the trench, were last seen inside on Friday night, Aug. 7. The witness said he could not get ahold of the two workers.
Patten said when firefighters responded it was unknown how long the workers had been trapped under the debris. A heavy rescue crew was called to the scene and with the help
of excavation equipment the bodies of the two men were recovered from the hole.
The men were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities haven't been released by authorities.
Patten said the trench had been made by the workers and he believed they were renovating the supermarket located in the area.
Cal/OSHA will be taking over the investigation of the incident. The agency did not immediately respond for comment about the investigation.
