Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence has been through this routine before.
As the team prepares for its first of three joint practices with the New Orleans Saints later this week, there’s a question of whether Lawrence will get any playing time in the first preseason on Aug. 15.
It’s something he’s been through several times in his career, and he isn’t focused on when he’ll play in the preseason.
He’s zeroed in on getting better with every rep that comes his way, regardless of if that’s a game or a practice.
“We got practice still on Tuesday here, and then we're going to go do joint practice and just trying to treat all those like game reps and get all these valuable
reps that are good opportunities for us to learn and grow,” Lawrence said at the conclusion of the 10th day of training camp at the Miller Electric Center on Aug. 9. “And then when the game comes, if I play, then I'll go and do my best there too. But I try not to focus on it too much.”
Lawrence had a sharp practice, completing 10 of 15 passes, highlighted by him connecting with Parker Washington on a deep shot down the sideline. It’s part of a growing bond between the two players, as Washington emerges as Jacksonville’s most consistent player through the early part of camp.
"Just consistency. I mean, the same guy every day, Lawrence said of Washington. "We might not connect on every rep, but it's that dialogue and the communication every single time. And you know what you're going to get from him."

Lawrence finding Washington for touchdowns has been a reoccurring sight for Jacksonville’s offense. Washington has been uncontainable in every phase of practice. Whether it’s full team periods, 7-on-7, or 1-on-1, he’s caught an assortment of passes.
But it’s the growing chemistry with Trevor Lawrence that’s been the quietest success the team has had. Prior to the long catch in the team period, Lawrence threw the same pass to Washington in individual drills.
Lawrence said he threw a bad pass during the individual drills, but Washington made a catch regardless. Lawrence had a short conversation with him and when the route came up in team drills, he threw a better pass that the fourth-year wide receiver could run under.

The result? Another Washington touchdown in training camp.
“I think you just learn as you play more football the best ways to communicate, what's actually important,” Lawrence said of his communication skills. “Like don't fill guys' brains with stuff that's really not that important. Like what do you actually need them to know?”
Lawrence admitted that he’s had an up-and-down training camp to this point. Some days he’s better than others, but he gave credit to Jacksonville’s defense for continually challenging the offense.
Whether he has a good or bad day, he’s consistently working after practice. Using a few extra allotments of time to get down routes with different pass catchers. It’s part of a not satisfied mentality that he’s attacked the whole offseason with.
“It's so easy, even for me, to assume we've done this before, we can relax on this coaching point or this detail or this play or this concept,” offensive coordinator Grant Udinski said of Lawrence. “He approaches it with that same beginner mentality or that white-belt mindset every single time he steps in the door. And that's what makes him so special; that makes him such a joy to coach.”
As the Jaguars enter the first week of the preseason, expect to see Lawrence continue to grow. Whether that’s in game or practice, he’s approaching the season with a maturity and confidence that he hasn’t displayed before.
