Jace Beck won't forget his first game in a Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp uniform.
The newly-acquired pitcher hurled a rain-shortened no-hitter in his debut for the Triple-A baseball club on Aug. 9, defeating the Gwinnett Stripers 4-0 in Lawrenceville, Ga.
Rain halted the game after five innings, with the result official.
Gwinnett (58-55, 20-19) only managed one baserunner, when leadoff man Patrick Clohisy reached on a first-inning error by Jacksonville third baseman Gage Miller and then stole second base. Beck (1-1) then retired 15 Stripers consecutively, five by strikeout.
Deyvison De Los Santos went 3 for 3 with a home run for Jacksonville (57-55, 15-23), and Maximo Acosta also went deep in the fourth inning to provide all the run support that Beck
needed.
Beck, a 26-year-old from Tuttle, Okla., joined the team on Aug. 4 after the Miami Marlins acquired him in a trade with the Chicago Cubs, which sent former Jumbo Shrimp pitcher Braxton Garrettto the Cubs.
In an improbable twist, Garrett was the last pitcher to throw a no-hitter for the Jumbo Shrimp, yielding no hits over eight innings in a 2-0 loss to the same opponent in the same ballpark on April 21.
Beck's no-hitter is the 15th in Jumbo Shrimp franchise history, which dates back to 1970 in the Double-A Southern League. The last rain-shortened no-hitter for the team belonged to Elih Villanueva, also in five innings, on Aug. 15, 2010 against the Carolina Mudcats.
For the year, he has a 7-3 record and a 3.39 ERA across three Double-A and Triple-A teams.
