Two years after bringing its signature hamburgers, frozen custard and fries to Jacksonville, Hwy 55 Burgers, Shakes & Fries has closed on the city's Westside.
The restaurant at 107 Danmac Lane permanently
closed on Wednesday, Sept. 16, according to a post on the location's Facebook page.
"We would like to inform our valued guests and community that Hwy 55 Burgers Shakes & Fries in Jacksonville, Florida is permanently closed," the post began. "We are incredibly grateful to everyone who supported this location, dined with us, and allowed our team to serve the Jacksonville community."
The North Carolina-based retro-themed diner made its Northeast Florida debut in June 2024, opening the restaurant near the Commonwealth Avenue/I-295 interchange, near Zaxby's, Waffle House, Burger King and Hardee's.
Founded in 1991, the chain has more than 50 restaurants in the Carolinas. The Jacksonville restaurant was one of just three outside North and South Carolina.
Hwy 55 is known for its fresh, never-frozen, hand-pattied burgers, cheesesteaks, chopped steak and shrimp platters, frozen custard and shakes and a selection of fries and tots, all served in a classic diner setting.
