This wasn't a typical Trevor Lawrence game, but when it mattered most, the Jacksonville Jaguars' franchise quarterback delivered one of the game's clutchest plays.
On fourth-and-five with about three minutes left, Lawrence dropped back in the shotgun and threw a 35-yard pass downfield to well-covered receiver Parker Washington. Washington caught a sensational one-handed snag for a touchdown, giving Jacksonville a late 16-14 lead over the Philadelphia Eagles.
It marked Jacksonville's first lead of the game since their second-drive touchdown that put them up 7-0 early. Their third lead came as time expired on a 57-yard clutch last-second field goal by kicker Cam Little. The Jaguars won 19-17.
None of how it transpired was normal, though.
Jaguars win on last second field goal despite fight, 100 penalty yards
"One of the craziest games, maybe the craziest game I've ever played in," Lawrence said after the game.
Lawrence finished the game completing 24 of 39 passes for 331 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. But beyond the stat line, the Jaguars struggled mightily on offense. Jacksonville ended eight of 12 drives in a punt, turnover or turnover on downs. The team was also called for 13 penalties for 100 yards.
In the second half alone, the team had an interception, two punts and a late turnover on downs inside the Philadelphia 5-yard line. Eagles defensive lineman Jalen Carter strip-sacked Lawrence twice; the QB was under duress most of the day, the Eagles hit him seven times and he had little time to throw.
Even as frustrations boiled over during the team's turnover-on-downs sequence in the fourth quarter, Lawrence prevailed.
After the game, Jaguars head coach Liam Coen said he was proud of Lawrence and thought he played well, even though drives stalled on multiple occasions.
"I thought Trevor actually played really well, really well," Coen said after the game.
"Had some things communication to be better about. You know, it was loud, obviously. I mean, that was challenging, especially in some of those fourth-and-goal to go [situations]. But we need to make some of those plays that we had opportunities to make in the red zone that we didn't."
The Jaguars went 0-3 in the red zone on Sunday.
Trevor Lawrence makes light of Jaguars homefield 'advantage'
While Jacksonville travels to London each year to play at least one home game away from home, the team rarely is afforded a home-field advantage.
That was especially true for the Jaguars, as Eagles fans packed a sold-out Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which holds 61,322 people. Philadelphia's traveling party easily drowned out the Jaguars fans.
Nothing could have prepared the Jaguars for the rambunctious crowd as the contest neared its end. Perhaps the biggest impact of the team's lack of home-field advantage came on a seven-play sequence that started on Philadelphia's one-yard line after tight end Brenton Strange caught a 27-yard pass.
Here's how the final plays of that drive went:
- Jacksonville calls a timeout before first-and-goal from the Eagles' 1-yard line.
- Walker Little commits a false start, pushing the Jaguars back to the six.
- Bhayshul Tuten gains 2 yards, setting up second-and-goal from the four.
- A delay-of-game penalty pushes Jacksonville back to the nine.
- Lawrence throws an incomplete pass intended for Brian Thomas Jr.
- Another delay-of-game penalty moves the Jaguars back to the 14.
- Lawrence completes a 9-yard pass to Washington, setting up fourth-and-goal from the 5.
- Lawrence's pass intended for Jakobi Meyers falls incomplete, resulting in a turnover on downs.
"Just in that moment where we kind of lost our minds a little bit," Lawrence said in postgame.
Philadelphia's crowd led to multiple penalties and, ultimately, a failed got-to-have-it drive for Jacksonville.
"I thought it was supposed to be a home game for us over here, but I guess, I guess you guys don't like us too much," Lawrence said with a laugh. "You like the Eagles a little bit more, so... I'm just messing around. But yeah, it was loud for sure."
Lawrence said the Jaguars typically have more fans at London games. This one was way more lopsided, though.,
"I will say, usually we have more fans being the Jags and playing over here so much. This was really the only time I can remember where it was so lopsided, but either way, I mean, the atmosphere was awesome, the stadium was packed, it was loud," said Lawrence.
"It's fun to play in regardless if they're for or against you. I think just having that atmosphere, and people are excited and loving the game, is fun; obviously, it's a lot more fun when you win, too."
Jaguars injury to Anton Harrison looms after win over Eagles
With less than 10 minutes remaining, Jaguars left tackle Anton Harrison went down with what appeared to be a non-contact right knee injury. Walker Little replaced him before the team ruled him out later in the contest.
Harrison switched from right tackle to left tackle during training camp as Cole Van Lanen recovered from a late-season knee injury. If Harrison can't suit up, Little will get his first start of the year.
Up next: Jaguars to face Texans at Wembley Stadium
The Jaguars will stay in London for Week 6 to host the Houston Texans at Wembley Stadium. The matchup marks Jacksonville's first divisional game of the year. As of print time, the Texans are 0-4 and lead the Tennessee Titans in Week 5.
