It was a good day of work for Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence in joint practice with the Carolina Panthers.
Lawrence had multiple touchdowns in red zone work, finding several pass catchers open for scores as the Panthers struggled to contain Jacksonville’s offense. It’s a continuation of what the team displayed in joint practice last week against the New Orleans Saints.
“He made a couple of off-schedule throws, and that's what I would attribute a lot of it to,” Coen said of Lawrence’s success in in the red zone. “When we got better in the red zone last year was when Trevor started using his legs. And we saw that again today.”
Coen
said he was undecided if starters would play in the preseason game against the Panthers on Aug. 21. The Jaguars have several injuries and he wanted to see what the team’s health was as they left the joint practice.
For Lawrence, his position on playing or not hasn’t changed much.
“I think the joint practices are really good just because they do feel more like a game necessarily than always going against your same team,” he said. “And you get to see different looks and guys come in and just that competition. It feels a little bit more like a game.”
Trevor Lawrence isn’t satisfied with Jaguars’ offense as team prepares for preseason game
Lawrence had a pretty sharp day of practice, logging 13 of 19 completions while taking a majority of the team reps. He had an interception, but that was his only poor decision on the day.
“But as far as just the competition, the competitiveness, the back and forth that always feels game-like,” Lawrence said. “The ebbs and flows where you get some momentum and then the defense, they make a couple plays, then you have to steady it out and get back on track. And I thought we did a good job of that today.”
As the preseason winds down, there are fewer available reps in game settings for Lawrence and the starting offense. That means every rep counts, and Lawrence has made an effort to make them count.
His communication and control of the offense is noticeably better this season, making checks and changing protection with relative ease. He’s continued on the momentum built last season as he and Brian Thomas Jr. continue to build on their relationship.
For all the work that he’s done to this point in the season, he could be “satisfied” with where the offense is. But he’s not.
“[I’m] not satisfied with necessarily where we're at, but where we're heading,” he said. “I really believe that we're getting better. I think we were a lot better today than we were last week when we went against the Saints.”
Whether Lawrence plays or not in the preseason game, expect him to be fully engaged and prepared.
Especially as the team turns to another joint practice slate next week, hosting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Aug. 25 and 26 prior to the final preseason game of the year on Aug. 28.
“There're so many details, so I think that there's going to be plenty on the tape to learn from,” Lawrence said. “I know I need to get better, so it's not necessarily satisfied, but definitely believing and I know that these guys, all our guys out here are getting better every day, and that's what we're working towards.”
