High school volleyball hits halfway. Who are Jacksonville's best so far?

Four weeks into the high school volleyball season, Northeast Florida's year is quickly taking shape — and the playoffs are knocking on the door.

In less than a month, dozens of Jacksonville teams will begin the Florida High School Athletic Association district tournaments, which open Oct. 12. The final day for regular season competition will be Thursday, Oct. 8.

With the postseason and potentially the FHSAA's inaugural Open Division growing closer by the day, here's a closer look at some of the major storylines in the area's volleyball season to date.

Best first-half team

Beachside

At 10-0 entering the week, the Barracudas have been untouchable so far. Only DME Academy and South Walton have even taken a set

against Beachside. They're also on the fringe of the top eight in the MaxPreps rankings for Flroida, the threshold to qualify for the inaugural FHSAA Open Division.

Best first-half player

Mollie VanDeusen, Beachside

The Florida State-committed senior, as she has shown for the last four seasons, can do it all. A combination right side and setter, she's up to 97 kills (with a .358 hitting percentage), 125 assists and 85 digs on the season. VanDeusen particularly displayed her versatility against Trinity Christian, Middleburg and independent DME Academy, finishing with triple-doubles.

Best surprise team

Tocoi Creek

The Toros aren't exactly coming out of nowhere — they went 14-13 last year and weren't far from reaching the FHSAA regionals — but they have made a distinct step up in 2026. They entered the week at 8-5, with outside hitter Avery Smith, libero Melanie Carey and setters Madelynn Hogan and Anna Wynn among the top performers.

Breakthrough newcomer

Nina Simanic, Beachside

Boom. The Barracudas' new outside hitter stands 6-3 in her freshman season and packs a punishing spike like few others in the Sunshine State. Opponents haven't found a way to contain her yet. Through her first 10 matches, Simanic has 126 kills with a .275 hitting percentage.

Best first-half match

Sept. 9, Ponte Vedra 3, Fletcher 2

Plenty of candidates this year, several of them involving Fletcher, which has played four matches that have gone the distance. Among the best was Ponte Vedra's wild 13-25, 27-25, 27-25, 23-25, 15-13 win last week, which included some giant numbers: 50 assists for Ponte Vedra's Jenna Hahnemann and 43 for Fletcher's Juliette Watson, as well as a career-high 23 kills for the Sharks' Vivienne Woodbury.

Biggest controversy

Sept. 10: Fernandina Beach-Jackson incident probed

Highlights on the court are not the only significant storyline of Northeast Florida's first half. A Sept. 10 volleyball match between Fernandina Beach and Jackson included allegations of racial insults, including the use of a dark-skinned baby doll in addition to alleged racist slurs and gestures, by members of the Nassau County school's crowd. Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan, School Board members and numerous representatives of other Duval County schools expressed their support for Jackson volleyball players following the incident. The Nassau County School District, which announced an immediate investigation, said in a Sept. 15 statement concluding its investigation that the doll was assigned for a school assignment and that it did not find evidence to substantiate racial slurs, but said the acts of "holding the doll in the air and shouting" by two students were "inappropriate and unacceptable."

When is the Gateway Conference tournament?

The top 12 Duval County public schools face off in the annual tournament from Oct. 6-8. Wolfson overcame Fletcher in the title match last season and returns much of its lineup.

Five second-half matches to watch

Sept. 21, Bolles at Wolfson. Less than a mile separates these schools, as the volleyball flies, and there's also history here after Wolfson bumped the Bulldogs out of the regional playoffs last October.

Sept. 22, Bolles at Bishop Kenny. Any time these two rivals get together, it's usually an intense atmosphere. The schools will meet again one week afterward on Oct. 1 at Bolles' Davis Gym as well.

Sept. 22, Middleburg at Fleming Island. Who's the best in Clay County? The winner of this match can claim the bragging rights. Middleburg has won the last seven meetings going back to 2021, dropping only two sets during that span.

Oct. 1, Beachside at Ponte Vedra. It's the rematch of the St. Johns County rivals in a series that could recur in the postseason as well. Beachside won both regular-season meetings last year before the Sharks finished on top in districts.

Oct. 5, Trinity Christian at Tocoi Creek. The Conquerors finished on top in a best-of-3 River City Classic tournament match in September. Don't be surprised if this is another close one.
