Second-half storms turned into an unusual bailout on the scoreboard for Sporting Club Jacksonville men's soccer, when severe weather wiped out the team's USL Championship game against Birmingham Legion on Oct. 10.
The game, which Birmingham was leading 1-0 at the time, was declared void under league rules and will be replayed in full at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14.
The teams had already agreed to move Saturday's planned game up four hours in an effort to beat the expected thunderstorms related to Hurricane Isaias, but lightning still halted the contest in the 49th minute.
Because of concerns about damage to the natural grass playing surface, Saturday's attempted game was held on an auxiliary artificial field adjacent to the University of North Florida's
Hodges Stadium, with the contest closed to spectators. Sporting Jax announced Saturday that the make-up game on Wednesday will also take place behind closed doors with no fans.
Before play was abandoned, Birmingham's Gevork Diarbian had scored in the 36th minute.
The Sporting Jax women already had their Gainbridge Super League game on Friday against DC Power FC postponed to Nov. 15.
