WATFORD, England — In a span of 12 hours on Oct. 11, Jacob Bobenmoyer went from camping with his kids in Colorado to boarding a flight to London to sign with the Jacksonville Jaguars’ practice squad.
“It was a whirlwind,” Bobenmoyer said on Oct. 15 after he completed his second practice.
The whirlwind started with long snapper Ross Matiscik sustained a right shoulder injury along the Philadelphia Eagles sideline while covering a first quarter punt. Defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton snapped for the remainder of the 19-17 Jaguars win.
Matiscik didn’t wear a sling on the shoulder while watching the first two practices of the week and remains on the active roster, but if he can’t play, Bobenmoyer will play on Oct. 18 against the Houston Texans.
The Jaguars’
first announcement about Matiscik’s injury was on X (formerly Twitter) at 7:56 a.m. Colorado time.
Within an hour, Bobenmoyer, who was in Divide, Colo., west of Colorado Springs, got a text from his agent. Back from camping, Bobenmoyer turned on the television broadcast and saw Matiscik wasn’t in the game.
“I was like, ‘If I fly out, it will be tonight,’” Bobenmoyer said.
Bobenmoyer returned to his home in the Denver area and was changing his child’s diaper when the Jaguars called postgame to ask if he had a passport. It was in a bathroom drawer.
The Jaguars wanted Bobenmoyer to get on a late afternoon (Denver time) flight that would have landed in London early afternoon on Oct. 12.
But …
“I had to wait for my mother-in-law to get there to watch the kids because my wife was out of town,” Bobenmoyer said.
Once she arrived, Bobenmoyer made the one-hour drive to Denver International Airport for the 8:35 p.m. (Oct. 11) United Flight 262 to London Heathrow. The nine-hour flight landed 12:25 p.m. (Oct. 12) and he took a 40-minute car ride to the Jaguars’ headquarters in Watford.
If Bobenmoyer faces the Texans, it will be his 97th NFL game. He spent three years apiece with the Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders before starting this season as a free agent.
“I trained and worked out exactly how I would if I was with a team and it paid off,” he said. “We’ll see how long I’m around (the Jaguars).”
