For Northeast Florida travelers looking for a 'European-style' getaway, you don’t have to cross the Atlantic. St. Augustine is bringing a taste of old-world charm closer to home.
A new analysis from global house- and pet-sitting platform TrustedHousesittersnamed the historic Florida city the best small U.S. destination for a European-style fall getaway. From Spanish colonial architecture and historic courtyards to walkable streets, cafés and fall events, St. Augustineoffers plenty of ways to experience an old-world atmosphere without leaving the country. St. Augustine topped the list with a score of 88.2 out of 100.

Why does St. Augustine feel like a European fall destination?

1. Historic streets are made for exploring
St. Augustine had more historic character than any other destination in the study's top 10, according to TrustedHousesitters.
The city has 62 heritage and cultural attractions, nearly three times as many as its closest competitor. Its Walk Score of 91 also makes the historic center particularly easy to explore on foot.
For visitors, that means a fall day can be spent wandering historic streets, stopping at cafés and taking in centuries-old architecture without needing to spend the day in a car.
2. Spanish architecture brings an 'old-world' feel
St. Augustine's Spanish roots are a major part of its European appeal.
Spanish colonial architecture, historic courtyards and centuries-old landmarks give the city a distinctly old-world atmosphere — while still offering the convenience of a Florida getaway.
The city's historic district is especially suited for travelers looking for a slower-paced fall trip centered around walking, sightseeing, food and architecture.
3. Fall events make up for the lack of foliage
Florida may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of colorful fall foliage, and the TrustedHousesitters analysis reflects that.
St. Augustine recorded 0% in the study's specific deciduous and mixed-forest metric. But the city makes up for its limited foliage with other fall attractions.
According to the analysis, St. Augustine tied for the highest number of autumn events among the destinations studied. Its strong walkability and concentration of historic and cultural attractions also add to its appeal during the fall season.

First United Methodist Church: Shop pumpkins of all sizes at the downtown pumpkin patch at King and Riberia Streets.
- When: Pumpkin patch starts October 8, 2026 – and open until pumpkins are gone. Open daily, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Shores United Methodist Church: Pick up pumpkins of all sizes at this free-admission pumpkin patch.
- When: October 12–31, 2026. Weekdays: 2 to 6 p.m.; Saturdays: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Sundays: Noon to 6 p.m.
- Trunk or Treat: October 30, 2026, from 6 to 7 p.m.

2. Paranormal Investigation at the Castillo de San Marcos
- What is it? Outdoor nighttime ghost tour and investigation exploring the dark history and ghost stories of the old fort.

5. 21st Annual St. George Street Trick-or-Treating

6. St. Augustine Ballet: 'Dracula'
