Trinity Christian survives UC with goal-line stand, chaotic finish

For Trinity Christian, it was gritty, grinding, grueling and occasionally messy.

But it was also victory, rivalry victory. And with it, very nearly a wrapped-up playoff berth before Labor Day.

After a lightning delay, nearly 20 Conqueror penalties and a series of closing events that at times left both teams asking questions, Trinity held firm at the goal line and the clock ran out on University Christian as Trinity held on 14-8 in high school football on Aug. 28.

Officials ruled that Harrison Leddy's quarterback sneak from a 22-man pileup came up short of the goal line, and UC (1-1) never got another snap away as Trinity (1-1) maintained its hold on the intense private-school rivalry.

They aren't officially champions

of Florida High School Athletic Association District 5-1A just yet -- that part still requires a victory over Impact Christian past the halfway point. But for practical purposes, they're nearly playoff-bound, in August.

But this might not be the end of the story for Trinity and UC, who could easily meet in November's regionals.
