What Jaguars coach Liam Coen said about team's victory over Cleveland

Jacksonville Jaguars coach Liam Coen held a news conference on Sept. 14 at the Miller Electric Center to discuss the Jags' 34-10 victory over the Cleveland Browns the day before at Everbank Stadium and look ahead to their first road game of the season, Sept. 20 at the Denver Broncos.

Quarterback Trevor Lawrence threw four touchdown passes and the defense had two turnovers and five sacks in the victory.

Liam Coen on the team's efficiency on opening day

"I think that the guys came out and tried to do what we asked them to do in terms of starting fast, play some complementary football, which I also was harping on, taking advantage of obviously the opportunities that we had with some of the turnovers. [It] wasn't perfect by any means. But a lot to clean up and coach off of. Some technique and a couple

things that we need to continue to to work on and coach on. But I was pleased with their energy, the way that they executed some situations, and jumped out to a fast start."

Liam Coen on rookie OG Emmanuel Pregnon

"He did some really good things in pass pro specifically, like when he was one-on-one in pass protection, he did a phenomenal job of sitting down, anchoring … he moved some people at the point of attack. Had a couple things at the second level and a few pulls that got a little bit jacked up. But I thought he played really well for his first career start."

Liam Coen on the Jaguars playing with two and three TEs

"I guess the way the game [progressed]… we probably were in some more heavier stuff, specifically in the second half, than maybe would have normally. But I wanted to get those guys reps. I wanted to kind of get those guys some more experience, knowing that especially early on the receivers all kind of got involved and did some things … I kind of wanted to get those other guys some more reps. It can continue to be a weapon for us to be able to be balanced in some of those settings and do a little bit more out of those groups to continue to help out, especially when you get injuries."

Liam Coen on preparing for Denver

"We have obviously have a lot of work to get done from now until the game is actually played tonight. So the coaches are extremely busy looking at Denver when we played them [last year] and sort of how they looked. We can look at the preseason a little bit because they have a new coordinator calling plays and what his flow looked like and some of the rhythm and ways that he called the game. But yeah, we got to wait a little bit to see what they truly look like tonight. So it'll be a late night for us as coaches and an early morning to get started."

Liam Coen on Lawrence throwing on the run

"That's impressive, to be off schedule and play creatively when it it is very challenging in the preseason, in training camp because you just don't get so many reps at that. The whistle blows quicker in training camp, as you know, and he's sitting there in a red jersey every day. And so it was great to see him be able to play off schedule, extend plays … [that] was such a weapon for us towards the back half of last year. I know the wideouts love it because it continues to allow them opportunities to make plays down the field, the offensive line really appreciates it because now he's moving off his spot, not just standing there like a statue, and allowing them to tee off on him."

Liam Coen on the decision to kick the first field goal

(Note: Coen elected to let Cam Little kick a 47-yard field goal on fourth-and-1 at the Browns' 29 in the second quarter).

"I think that with the way our defense was playing … they had just stuffed us. I think on third down, and I wanted to get Cam in there. At that point, I felt like points were necessary. Part of me wanted to go for it, absolutely. But I felt confident making the decision. I know the offense wanted to stay on the grass, which I appreciate. But I think early in the year, just man, let's go get some points. We're up 14-0. Let's get Cam involved. Let's get him going a little bit. You know, in the way the defense was playing, I felt confident we'd get some more ops to be able to score some more touchdowns."

Liam Coen on RB Bhayshul Tuten

"I think [Bhayshul Tuten] ran his tail off, man. He ran hard. I thought he ran through arm tackles a ton. Something we got to keep working on him with, though, is when we get into the open field and you have a one-on-one defender, he's just going to close the space a little bit before you make a move. But I thought he did some nice things."

Liam Coen on blocking of TEs and WRs

"I thought out tight ends blocked their a---s off. Quinton Morris did some really good things at the point of attack. I mentioned [Nate Boerkircher]. [Brenton] Strange was involved in there as well, and I think the receivers did a really nice job out on the perimeter doing their job … staying feisty. It truly takes all 11 in this offense to run the football, and I think our guys did a nice job."

Liam Coen on OT Cole Van Lanen

(Note: Cole Van Lanen missed most of the preseason on the Physically Unable to Perform list. He started at right tackle.)

"He did well. He was confident, held his own … got the work that we wanted him to get, knowing that he hasn't played a ton. The plan really was, if he was going to be able to go, that we would try to just limit it to a half and get him that work. And now we've got all this week of him being able to take those reps and get more conditioning, so that he's ready to go. Obviously, going into Denver [at a high altitude], that's something we have to be aware of as a team, but especially Cole not having played a ton. He was pumped … he was excited. He was happy about the way he performed. That he went out there and just let it rip and cut it loose. I was pleased with him."
