From one iconic building to another, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office made its headquarters move to the Florida Blue tower in Riverside official with a ceremonial ribbon cutting Tuesday, Oct. 20.
Sheriff T.K. Waters , Mayor Donna Deegan, City Council President Nick Howland and others did the honors at 532 Riverside Ave. A tour included stops at the new Public Services Building at 450 Magnolia St., Real Time Crime Center and Communications Center. Past Sheriffs James McMillan, Nat Glover and John Rutherford also were on hand.
After about three years of considerations and plans, the Sheriff's Office began moving its downtown administrative offices from the Police Memorial Building at 501 E. Bay St. to the nearby Florida Blue building in September.
Its lease is for three floors.
"Once the transition is fully completed, nothing will remain at the Police Memorial Building," a Sheriff's Office spokesman said.
The headquarters had been downtown since 1977, but the building has become outdated. Although there's no current plan for what will happen to it, redevelopment opportunities have been speculated and there also has been years of discussion about relocating the adjoining jail.
