Angie Nixon won Florida’s Democratic primary for U.S. Senate in an upset victory on Tuesday, August 18, emerging from a field of three democratic socialist candidates who sought to shake up the party’s mainstream establishment.
The Florida state representative and Jacksonville native also made history by becoming the first Black woman to win a major-party nomination for U.S. Senate in the state.
Now, Nixon will face incumbent Republican Sen. Ashley Moody in the Nov. 3 general election.

On the Democratic side, Florida state Rep. Angie Nixon, an outspoken Democratic Socialist
of America member, won the Senate Democratic primary against Alex Vindman, a retired Army lieutenant colonel who gave critical evidence during Trump's first impeachment.
Nixon (56% of votes) defeated Vindman (44% of votes) with an estimated 99% of votes counted.

State Rep. Angie Nixon is a progressive who recently joined the Democratic Socialists of America.
"Angie Nixon is running because too many families are working harder than ever and still falling behind — while corrupt billionaires and greedy corporations rig the system in their favor," according to her website.
"Together, let’s build a people-powered movement that fights for a government that creates opportunity, respects our dignity, and puts all working families and seniors first."

Nixon was born in Jacksonville, Florida, and graduated from Stanton College Preparatory School and the University of Florida.
What does Angie Nixon stand for as a Democratic Socialist?
Her platform, as posted on her website, said Nixon will "fight for working families" with:
- Medicare for all
- Free childcare
- Free paid family and sick leave
- Tuition-free public college and trade school and canceling student debt
- National rent freeze and moratorium on evictions
- Universal jobs program with inflation-adjusted wages
Paying for those programs would entail:
- Taxing billionaires "so that everyone pays their fair share"
- Prioritizing the "needs of everyday Americans instead of spending trillions on war and violence overseas"
- Getting big money out of politics

Florida state Rep. Angie Nixon won an upset victory in Florida's Senate Democratic primary against Alex Vindman.
Nixon became the first Black woman to win a major party nomination for U.S. Senate in Florida.
Moving forward, if she defeats incumbent Republican Sen. Ashley Moody in the Nov. 3 general election, Nixon would become the first Black lawmaker and second woman ever elected to represent Florida in the U.S. Senate.

Nixon's win is among several garnered by democratic socialists across the United States this year.

Nixon charged with trespassing after sit-in at governor's office
She gained a bit of notoriety after staging asit-in at Gov. Ron DeSantis' office earlier this year in protest against Florida's redrawn congressional map.
She was charged with trespassing and resisting an officer without violence
Her trial is scheduled for September.
