This weekend: Jags, jazz and a Fernandina Beach band in the spotlight

Flipturn is a five-piece indie rock band out of Fernandina Beach. They've put out three EPs and two albums since 2017 that sold pretty well and they're a popular act on the music-festival circuit, but they're hardly a household name.

So how is it that they've all but sold out the St. Augustine Amphitheatre for a Friday night show? It's a classic case of building a fanbase through word of mouth and a lot of live shows. They've performed in nine countries since 2024, appeared on "Jimmy Kimmel Live," played the iconic Red Rocks amphitheater in Colorado and rocked festivals from Florida to California this summer.

And you can't go wrong with a homecoming show. The core of the band, singer Dillon Basse, guitarist Tristan Duncan and bass player Madeline

Jarman, formed the band while they were still in high school, then refined it at the University of Florida. They're signed to Dualtone Records, which specializes in indie bands such as Shovels & Rope, the Lumineers and Futurebirds.

Tickets, ranging from $60-$105, are still available but going fast. South Carolina indie band Winyah opens.

Ancient City Con

1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25; 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26; noon Sunday, Sept. 27, at World Golf Village Renaissance Resort. $42-$70.

Cast members from "Star Trek Voyager" and "Starship Troopers" will be there, and you can sit in on workshops to learn to make foam wings, explore the link between nerds and hip hop, join cosplay contests and celebrate the late Tim Curry with his "Rocky Horror Picture Show" co-star Barry Bostwick. Mozart & Tchaikovsky

7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25, and Saturday, Sept. 26, at Jacoby Symphony Hall. $39-$111.

Jacoby Symphony Hall, where the Jacksonville Symphony performs, has all-new seats and carpeting, a renovated choral loft and new acoustic shelves to improve sound quality. The symphony is ready to see how it all sounds, welcoming guest pianist Evren Ozel to perform Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 22 and selections from Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake." Courtney Lewis conducts. Jazz on the Avenue

3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, at 822 A. Philip Randolph Blvd. Free.

The Melanin Market is a semi-regular event that promotes Black businesses on a street named for a pioneering civil rights activist. Jazz on the Avenue expands the market with live music, artists, crafters and vendors. Workshops and jazz jam sessions are also planned. Jaguars vs. Patriots

1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, at EverBank Stadium. $190-$1,300.

If you want to see the Jaguars live, get 'em while you can. The team won't play another game in Jacksonville until Nov. 1, and they only have four more after that before relocating to Orlando next season while the stadium is rebuilt. With capacity reduced by 23,000 for this year, tickets are scarce and pricey (the cheapest ticket available earlier this week was $190). Should be a good game, though, matching two playoff teams from last year. You can also watch from home on CBS.
