The Jacksonville Jaguars may be starting over with their backup quarterback situation.
According to an NFL Network report, subsequently confirmed to the Times-Union by a league source, the Jaguars are acquiring quarterback Quinn Ewers from the Miami Dolphins. The teams are also exchanging 2028 draft picks.
By acquiring Ewers, it is possible the Jaguars weren’t enamored with the play from any of their three backup quarterbacks (Nick Mullens, Carter Bradley or Joey Aguilar) during the preseason games.
Jaguars quarterbacks were a combined 55 of 86 for 623 yards, three touchdowns, three interceptions and an 82.7 passer rating in the preseason.
If the Jaguars cut Mullens, they would absorb a $1.3 million “dead” cap hit and create $1.2 million in cap space
according to the industry website Over The Cap.
Ewers, 23, was a seventh-round pick by the Dolphins in 2025 and went 1-2 as a starter, throwing three touchdowns and interceptions apiece. His only win was 20-17 over Tampa Bay (172 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions). He played college football at Texas after transferring from Ohio State.
In NCAA football, Ewers completed 737 of 1,135 passes (64.9 percent) with 68 touchdowns and 24 interceptions at Texas. He appeared in only one game while at Ohio State.
Under NFL rules, the Jaguars must reduce their active roster from 90 to 53 men before the league deadline of 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30.
